O poder de um "beep" - Sputnik 1 - 50 Anos

Nesse dia 4 de outubro comemoram-se os 50 anos do lançamento ao espaço do primeiro artefato feito pelo homem, o satélite russo Sputnik 1.

Ele foi o resultado do trabalho do professor russo Konstantin Eduardovitch Tsiolkovsky, responsável por descrever todos os princípios matemáticos do vôo espacial, e dos engenheiros, liderados por Sergey Korolyev, que apresentaram à Academia de Ciências Soviéticas, em 1934, um estudo completo sobre vôo espacial.

O satélite foi lançado no Cosmódromo de Baikonur (atualmente no Casaquistão) a bordo do foguete R-7 de três estágios, originalmente desenvolvido para fins militares e sendo capaz de carregar ogivas nucleares.

O Sputnik 1 era uma esfera de aproximadamente 58,5 cm de diâmetro, pesando 83,6 Kg, com uma superfície de alumínio extremamente polida, a fim de refletir ao máximo a luz solar e possibilitar a sua visibilidade da Terra. Além disso, possuía 2 pares de antenas flexíveis de 2,4 m e 2,9 m.

Não tinha nenhuma função extraordinária, a não ser transmitir um sinal de rádio ("beep"), sintonizável por qualquer rádio-amador. Uma gravação do "beep" pode ser ouvida aqui:

Viajando numa órbita elíptica, inclinada de 64,3º em relação ao Equador terrestre, dava uma volta ao redor da Terra em apenas 96,3 minutos. O Sputnik 1 transmitiu dados por 22 dias, quando então suas baterias se esgotaram. Após 92 dias no espaço e 1440 órbitas ao redor da Terra, o satélite se desintegrou ao entrar na atmosfera terrestre em 4 de Janeiro de 1958.

Apesar de sua função aparentemente simplória, os dados obtidos com a experiência, serviram de base para outras missões dentro do projeto Sputnik, como o lançamento do Sputnik 2, com o primeiro ser vivo a ser enviado para órbita, a cadela de raça laika, chamada Kudriavka, que morreu por falta de suprimento de ar. Diversas outras missões foram realizadas, como a Sputnik 5, onde houve o envio de diversos animais, mas com o seu retorno seguro.

Mas o principal impacto do lançamento do Sputnik 1, foi a surpresa causada nos EUA, que motivou o governo americano a investir maciçamente no programa espacial e na formação de capital intelectual e científico, a fim de dar uma resposta a URSS, inimiga na Guerra Fria. A resposta veio com o lançamento do Explorer I, em 31 de Janeiro de 1958. Em 1º de Outubro de 1958 foi criada a NASA.

Assim começou a Corrida Espacial, que contribuiu em muito para o desenvolvimento tecnológico em muitas outras áreas.
